A wise recipe · Early math
Counted on the lanterns going up the hill, one light at a time.
One small counter · Five minutes
Line the ten things up in a row, evenly spaced.
Touch each one as you say its number. Touch, say, move on.
Now count them backwards, from ten down to one.
Take two away. How many lanterns are still lit?
Put them back. Count again, faster, and laugh when you trip up.
Count the lanterns on the way up the hill, then the stars on the way down.
Nobody does it alone.

The book this kitchen came from — Soot bakes her way through the first snow, and the whole hill turns up hungry.
