A Recipe for Counting to Ten

Counted on the lanterns going up the hill, one light at a time.

One small counter · Five minutes

Ingredients

  • Ten small things — buttons, cookies, stones, lanterns
  • One pointing finger
  • A steady voice
  • Somewhere to line them up

How it's done

  1. 1

Line the ten things up in a row, evenly spaced.

  2. 2

Touch each one as you say its number. Touch, say, move on.

  3. 3

Now count them backwards, from ten down to one.

  4. 4

Take two away. How many lanterns are still lit?

  5. 5

Put them back. Count again, faster, and laugh when you trip up.

Count the lanterns on the way up the hill, then the stars on the way down.

Nobody does it alone.
