A Recipe for a Good Friend

Nothing to bake. Read it at the table, or tape it inside a lunchbox lid.

Makes one friendship, keeps for years · A little every day

Ingredients

  • A pinch of listening — more than you think
  • One whole cup of showing up
  • Two spoons of saying sorry, level, not heaped
  • A handful of laughing at their joke, even the second time
  • Room enough for them to be quiet

How it's done

  1. 1

Ask how they are. Then wait for the real answer.

  2. 2

Fold in the thing they like doing, even if you like a different thing.

  3. 3

When it goes lumpy, don't throw it out. Stir gently and wait.

  4. 4

Add one kind word a day. It doesn't need to be a big one.

  5. 5

    Keep somewhere warm.

Try one ingredient tomorrow and see what happens.

Nobody does it alone.
