From Soot's oven · Pull-apart honey butter loaf

Long Hall Supper Bread

For the night the whole hill eats at one table. No kneading, no waiting about — just a loaf built to be torn into by many hands at once.

Serves 8–10 · 40 minutes

You'll need

  • 2 tubes refrigerated biscuit dough (or 16 small dough balls)
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs, or cinnamon for a sweet loaf
  • A pinch of flaky salt

How to make it

  1. 1

Warm the oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a loaf tin.

  2. 2

Stir the melted butter, honey and herbs together in a wide bowl.

  3. 3

Roll each piece of dough in the honey butter until it shines.

  4. 4

Stand the pieces up in the tin, loosely, like a row of little doors.

  5. 5

Pour any leftover butter over the top and scatter the salt.

  6. 6

Bake 28–32 minutes, until deep gold. Turn out and let everyone pull off their own piece.

Pip's job: rolling each piece in the honey butter and standing them in the tin.

Grown-up job: the oven, and turning the hot tin out.

"One loaf. Sixteen pieces. Nobody has to ask for a slice." — Soot
