Hazel is seven and never far from her lantern. She walks at the front of every procession, sings the loudest at the caroling, and is usually the first to decide what happens next.

Bram is six, freckled, and always in a hat a size too big — a pumpkin in autumn, a cranberry beanie once the snow comes. His socks have never matched and never will.

Pip is a very small round bat with ears bigger than the rest of him put together — usually somewhere overhead, always carrying the smallest lantern on the hill.

Puff goes everywhere with a nightlight and a patchwork quilt, and notices the things the others miss. On Christmas morning, the box by the door is Puff's.

Timblemoon's Santa is the folkloric traveller, not the modern red suit. He sits in the big carved chair at the far end of the Long Hall.

When the snow lies deep she takes her ladder down Lantern Lane and lights every lamp to the Big Oak and back, knitting basket on her arm. She is her own woman.

The weeping willow · sub-line lead

An old weeping willow with a face where the trunk meets the crown, his longest branches trailing into a beach cove. Country animals come to him with a trouble, and he answers with a story.

The look — Face in silver bark tones; extra-long weeping branches form his beard and mustache; leaf tufts for eyebrows; branches trail into shallows glistening with rainbow iridescence.
